Corrugated Flute Types Explained: E Flute, B Flute, C Flute and Double Wall

Compare E, B and C flute corrugated board, plus double wall structures, to choose the right balance of printing, cushioning and stacking strength.

Corrugated board is not a single material specification. Its performance depends on the liner papers, the fluted medium, adhesive, board construction and manufacturing quality. Among these variables, the flute profile is one of the first choices packaging buyers encounter.

E flute, B flute and C flute each create a different balance of thickness, rigidity, cushioning and print surface. Double wall board combines two fluted layers when a package needs greater structural capacity. Understanding these differences helps buyers discuss requirements accurately instead of selecting a box only by overall thickness.

How corrugated board is constructed

Single wall corrugated board consists of one fluted medium bonded between two flat liner sheets. The arches of the flute separate the liners and act like a series of columns when the board is loaded on edge. This structure increases bending rigidity and provides space that can absorb some side impact.

On a corrugator, paper medium passes through corrugating rolls that form the wave profile. Adhesive bonds the flute tips to the liners. Paper properties, flute formation, moisture, heat, bonding and warp control all affect the finished board. Two sheets described by the same flute letter can therefore perform differently.

E flute: a fine profile for compact printed packaging

E flute has a relatively fine, closely spaced wave profile. The Fibre Box Association describes it as having about 90 flutes per foot, although actual profiles can vary. Its thinner construction provides a comparatively flat surface that can support detailed graphics and compact structural designs.

Common applications include retail cartons, cosmetics, small electronics, subscription boxes, display packaging and lightweight e-commerce mailers. E flute can provide more rigidity and edge protection than ordinary folding carton board while keeping the package visually refined.

It is not automatically the best choice for heavy products or tall warehouse stacks. The complete board grade and box structure still need to match the product weight and distribution route.

B flute: compact strength and good converting performance

B flute has a coarser profile than E flute and about 47 flutes per foot according to the Fibre Box Association. It offers a useful combination of puncture resistance, rigidity, die-cutting performance and a reasonably smooth printing surface.

It is widely used for die-cut mailers, beverage and food packs, small shipping cartons, retail-ready packaging and partitions. Compared with E flute, B flute usually creates a thicker and more protective structure. Compared with C flute, it is generally more compact and can perform well in precise die-cut designs.

C flute: a versatile shipping-box profile

C flute is commonly treated as an all-purpose profile and has about 38 flutes per foot. Its deeper arches provide useful cushioning and stacking characteristics, which is why it appears frequently in regular slotted shipping cartons and general transport packaging.

C flute is often considered when products require more cushioning depth than a fine flute can provide. However, a larger flute does not guarantee a stronger box. Liner and medium grades, box dimensions, score quality, hand holes, printing coverage, closures and storage humidity all affect compression performance.

A flute and F flute: useful profiles at opposite ends

A flute has a larger profile with about 33 flutes per foot. Its depth can provide cushioning and vertical properties for suitable applications, although it is less common than B or C flute in many modern box programs.

F flute is very fine, with about 125 flutes per foot. It is used in compact retail and folding-carton-style structures where surface quality and space efficiency are important. Availability and exact construction vary by supplier and region, so it should be specified through a physical board sample.

What double wall corrugated board means

Double wall board contains two fluted mediums and three liners. The two flute layers may use different profiles, such as a finer flute paired with a larger flute. This allows the board designer to combine properties such as puncture resistance, cushioning, bending stiffness and compression capacity.

Typical uses include heavy products, industrial components, appliances, bulk packs and demanding export shipments. Double wall construction also increases material use and package dimensions, so it should be selected through engineering rather than treated as a universal upgrade.

Five factors beyond the flute letter

  1. Paper grade: liner and medium properties strongly influence strength, moisture response and appearance.
  2. Box structure: dimensions, panel orientation, scores, openings and closures change load paths.
  3. Printing and finishing: heavy ink coverage, lamination and coatings may affect converting and recycling considerations.
  4. Distribution environment: stacking duration, vibration, impacts, temperature and humidity should reflect the real supply chain.
  5. Testing: material tests such as edge crush are useful, but the packed box should also be validated as a complete system.

Important: flute letters describe profile families, not a complete performance specification. Ask the supplier to state the board construction and agreed test requirements on the quotation or specification sheet.

Choose the board as part of the complete package

E flute is valuable when compact dimensions and print presentation are priorities. B flute offers a practical balance for many die-cut and shipping formats. C flute is widely used for general transport cartons, while double wall structures address more demanding loads. None of these choices should be made from the flute name alone.

A reliable specification starts with the product weight, dimensions, fragility, pallet pattern, storage conditions and shipping route. From there, the packaging supplier can compare board constructions, produce samples and validate the packed product under relevant conditions.
