Two bags can both be described as “polypropylene reusable totes” and still feel completely different in the hand. One may have a visible crosswoven texture and carry bulky retail goods; the other may be soft, light and intended for an event giveaway. What is a woven PP bag?
For woven polypropylene fabric, PP is made into narrow tapes that cross over and under one another. The interlaced structure gives the surface its familiar grid and helps distribute load across two directions. The fabric can remain visibly woven or be coated and laminated for a smoother, more printable exterior.
Woven PP is commonly considered for supermarket totes, larger promotional bags, agricultural sacks and product packs that need a more structural feel. A laminated woven bag can carry detailed graphics, but film, ink and adhesive must be specified as one construction rather than approved separately.
What is a non-woven PP bag?
Non-woven PP shopping bags are often made from spunbond material: continuous polymer filaments are laid into a web and bonded without first turning them into yarn and weaving them. This distinction follows the industry definition published by INDA, the Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry.
The result is usually a lighter, cloth-like sheet with no crosswoven tape pattern. It can be cut and sewn or, for compatible designs, joined by ultrasonic or thermal methods. Non-woven totes are widely used for exhibitions, retail promotions, garment packing and lightweight shopping applications.

Lamination changes both appearance and construction
A printed film laminated to PP fabric can create photographic graphics, a smoother surface and additional resistance to dirt or splashes. It also adds another layer to the package. Buyers should approve gloss or matte appearance, film adhesion, fold whitening, edge finish, odor and rub resistance. If end-of-life design is part of the brief, identify every layer, ink, adhesive, handle and closure rather than describing the bag simply as “PP.”
Do not choose by GSM alone
Grams per square metre describes material mass per area, but it does not state seam strength, handle performance or complete-bag capacity. Two fabrics with the same stated mass can behave differently because their structures and finishing differ. A quotation should name the construction and approved material sample, while the finished bag should have an agreed load test.
Questions to answer before sampling
- What product, maximum intended load and shape will the bag carry?
- Is the priority structure, soft hand feel, price or graphic coverage?
- Does it need lamination, a bottom board, zipper or internal pocket?
- What handle length, width and attachment method will be comfortable?
- What reuse claim and test evidence will the brand communicate?
- Which market, chemical requirements and labeling rules apply?

Inspection should cover finished dimensions, fabric shade, lamination, print position, seams, loose threads, handle symmetry, reinforcement, closure function and loaded balance.
